Background:
Ideological education was one of the most important activities of the youth movement during the short existence of the Hitler Youth Flanders. Once or twice a month – and preferably more often – the so-called “Heimavonden” evenings were organized. During these meetings, the leadership read texts about which the members asked questions and discussed. The purpose of these evenings was to “inspire the boys and girls and make them ready for admission. In itself it was about the indoctrination of the Flemish youth.
The content of this ideological education corresponded with the ideas of the DeVlag and hardly differed from that of the German Hitler Youth. This is how Greater Germany was presented as an ideal to the members of the Hitler Youth Flanders. To make the children feel like real Germans, old customs were dusted off. For example , according to the instructions for the leaders, the morning consecration was a recurring ritual during outings.
