Description
Dutchmilitaria.com is proud to be able to offer here an original first type of “Das Coburger Abzeichen” (The Coburg Badge 1st Type).
The condition of the badge is very good, it has the original thin needle and as can be seen by the many detailed photo’s it has great details. Two details i like to point out: the typical first type badge die flaw in the centre of the right lower arm of the sastika, and the filemarks on the lower left side of the sword (just above the second “2” of 1922).
This is a must have item and could definately be the centrepiece of any political medal collection.
With 436 issued pieces it is among the rarest of all officially by the NSDAP awarded awards. It was also one of the highest and most prestigious awards with a legendary history dating back to the early days – the Kampfzeit – of the NSDAP. Throughout the whole period of the Third Reich old fighters would ask eachother: “But were you at Coburg?”, referencing to the Deutscher Tag in Coburg on October 14/15th in 1922, when approximately 800 members of the Munich SA together with other SA men from Bavarian cities, arrived in Coburg for a rally, but got into streetbattles with leftist and Communist political opponents. After two days victory belonged to the nazi’s and up untill 1945 the stories regarding this “battle” grew into almost mythological proportions. Only 436 badges were awarded, and a small number of honorary (second type) badges were also awared throughout the 1930’s.
The first type badges are extremely rare to encounter. In the whole collectingworld are only less than 30 (!) badges known. The badge we offer here is one of those.
To put things into perspective: please mind that the Coburg badge was compared to e.g. a Knightscross awarded more than 20 times less, and 10 times less than a Bloodorder. Calling a first type Coburg badge rare is probably an understatement!
and compared to e.g. a Knightscross tht was awared over 8000 times
