Description
The “Korps Rijdende Artillerie”, also known under it’s common name “Gele Rijders” [Yellow Riders] was a regiment of the Royal Dutch Army.
The Horse Artillery was established by the States General on February 21, 1793, at the initiative of stadtholder William V. This enabled the artillery to follow the horses of the much faster cavalry on the battlefield. The Yellow Riders were deployed in 1799 at the Battle of Mons, where they, along with the French, defeated the English and Russians.
Between 1838 and 1841, the various “batteries” of the Corps, later Regiment, of Horse Artillery were located in Amersfoort. After his inauguration in 1840 King William II visited several Dutch cities. On July 2, 1841, he visited Amersfoort. He then inspected the riding school and stables of the horse artillery. In 1842, he initiated the introduction of a uniform trimmed with yellow braid for the Horse Artillery, which gave rise to the name “Yellow Riders.” They were a favorite theme for painters such as Breitner, Hoynck van Papendrecht, Pieneman, and Staring. Nineteenth-century commanders included Falter, Singendonck, Van Tuyll van Serooskerken, Tindal, De Villeneuve, Van Diepenbrugge, and Steenberghe.
After the German victory in May 1940, the Dutch army was disbanded, including the Horse Artillery. After World War II, the Dutch army was rebuilt, but without the Horse Artillery. Motorization and mechanization had made the regular field artillery easily transportable, rendering the Horse Artillery redundant as a separate army unit. As such finding original “Yellow Rider” uniforms is very very rare!
The here offered uniform is a complete uniform of a “wachtmeester” [watchman]. It consists of the following items:
– Tunic
– Trousers
– A so called “Bear hat” aka “Kolbak” (including its case for transport)
– “Yzerhouwer” saber by maker W.K&C
– Sabre belt + sabre bag
– Giberne
– Riding boots
– Original metalic box with sever accoutrements
– braided belt
– side cap
Yellow riders items are seldom offered. To find a complete uniform is near impossible and is among th rarest of all dutch army uniforms to find!!!
