This is a Large German female cultural rune brooch with Nauth and Rit runes. Both these runes come from the elder futhark.
The Nauth rune stands for need/hardship, the Rit rune stands for Riding or the road. As a letter they stand for the letter N and R.
In the middle of the brooch is a swastika/sunwheel symbol. This is i tend to think here meant as a symbol of luck, holiness, and prosperity.
The typical crude made brooch is from the 1920’s and most probably from a “völkische” organisation like Der Wandervogel. The swastika is confused by many as a symbol for the NSDAP, but let’s not forget it is a much older symbol. Before Hitler got to power in 1933 it was already in wide use from Amerika, to Germany and India. In the 1920’s existed in Germany for several decades organisations that wanted to go back to nature and these often used such symbolism likes runes and even the swastika.
The brooch is i think some kind of good luck item, with the two runes on both sides most probably standing for the initials of a man and women who’s initials were N and R. The “good luck” sunwheel in the middle was to wish them luck in their bond or relation in this world.
This is a very rare item!!!!
The size of the brooch is approximately 7,3 x 5 centimeter, it is quite impressive.
In good condition!
