This is a Spanienkreuz in Bronze mit Schwertern / Spanish Cross in Bronze with Swords.
The Spain cross was instituted on 14. April 1939 by decree of Adolf Hitler, and was intended for soldiers of the German Wehrmacht who had served in the Spanish civil war in the Condor Legion, on the side of the Phalangists of General Franco.
The official documents of the Spanish cross indicate under what conditions the Spanish Cross with swords could be awarded. It was determined that the cross with swords
1. was awarded to the volunteers of the Condor Legion,
2. was awarded to the crew of the German Kriegsmarine ships involved in fighting in Spanish waters in the:
a) air raid on Ibiza,
b) bombardment of Almería,
c) air raid on Palma
In total 8.462 bronze crosses with swords were awarded, this number is a bit higher then the version without swords (7869), but for some reason these versions with swords seem harder to find nowadays then the version without swords. Either way, Spaniencrosses are very hard to find!
Although the here offered cross is not visibly maker marked it can because of how it is made (particularly the hardware on the reverse) with certainty be attributed to being made by maker C.E. Juncker from Berlin.
A very rare cross in good condition!
