This is an original Westerbork “durchganglager” inmates hat.
The hat is in mint/unused condition, and comes from a box with several bundles with such hats that were discovered a few years ago.
These hats were made in 1942 and worn by the prisoners in the dutch concentrationcamp and “durchgangslager” Westerbork, as well as camp Vledder that housed jewish prisoners before they were interned in Westerbork.
These typical dutch prisonhats are of the same model as the more known german grey-blue striped concentration camp hats, but have a brown color. The size of the hat is “58”.
Please mind that although the hat is unworn, it represents a serious and very dark piece of (dutch) history. Camp Westerbork was the place were a lot of political, Jewish, Roma and other by the German occupying forces unwanted people were gathered, before they were transported to the German deathcamps.
This is a unique piece of headgear.
I added a few period black and white images found via google, that show these hats in wear by jewish prisoners.
The hat is 100% original!
