Description
This is a so called “Spanische Fertigung” (Spanish production) of the Winterschlacht im Osten medaille (Ostmedal).
Collectors consensus tells that these medals were made for Spanish veterans (being former volunteers), of the wartime Spanish Blue Division, a unit of Spanish volunteers and conscripts who served in the German Army on the Eastern Front of the Second World War.
It is not exactly known when and by whom these medals were made, but it is obviously that these poorly made medals are post war made. Either way, although they are crudely made and lack the detail that the German made wartime Ostmedals have, they are quite rare to find and missing from most Ostmedal collections. While i can’t verify it the maker is thought to be “Casa Flandez group” of Calle Mayor 11 in Madrid. This information comes from the Warrelics forum and i think it needs to be investigated further in the future. It is however interesting information and i think it should be mentioned here.
The here offered medal is in excellent condition for what it is and comes with the typical Spanish clasp on top of the ribbon. Please mind no one knows exactly when these were made, be it 1946 of 1976/
Despite its crude appearance and post war production it’s a very rare medal to find that is missing from most Ostmedal collections!
