Description
(Holland) Dutch WWII Liberation commemorative tile (1945).
This is a liberation tile, that was painted as a commemorative item directly after the war. It shows four scenes:
-1 A Booth with the word “MOF” (this translates a bit like “the hun” as the english called the Germans in WWI). The german booth is symboloic for the trampling of the dutch population by the German occupying forcs during World War 2.
-2 The dates 1940-1945 and the word “Vrijheid”, which means LIBERATION. The chained hands are symbolic of the dutch peopulation that was figuratively “chained” by the war.
-3 A yellow star of David and the words: “Niet ten schande, maar ten eer”. During the war dutch jewish people were forced to wear the yellow stars of David. After the war was written on this tile: “not as shame, but to honor”, clearly to support the jewish victims and the suffering they endured during the war by the nazi’s.
-4 A parchement roll with written on it: “Zou Jehove zijn volk verlaten?” (Would Jehava leave his people?).
I’ve seen hundreths of different liverations tiles in my collecting life, but this is the first in this design.
It would make for a very special display item.
