The Marine Hafen Abteilung Rotterdam was formed in August 1940 for the care and supervision of the crews of the “Seelowe” vessels moored there. Operation “Seelowe” was the code name of the plans for the invasion of England. Preparations were made for this in a number of ports on the North Sea and along the English Channel. The transport of material and men would take place from this port. In the harbor there were also exercises with special built landing crafts, often converted barges that had been requisitioned from Dutch skippers. There was no invasion; from September 1944 the vessels with crew were mainly used for the care and movement of their troops in the mouth of the Scheldt.
